Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

Affecting nearly 50% of all men, enlarged male breasts is a common condition caused by a number of factors.  Gynecomastia can be caused by hormonal imbalances, localized fat deposits, genetics and medications.  While most men who suffer from gynecomastia experience enlarged breasts early in life, the condition usually corrects itself in adulthood.  However, in some cases, gynecomastia can persist into adulthood causing lower self-esteem and self-confidence.  This condition can be surgically corrected by Dr. Michele Koo restoring a firm and masculine chest appearance.

Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) Procedure

Since male breast reduction generally removes much less volume than a female breast reduction, incisions can usually be limited, reducing visible scarring.  Gynecomastia surgery typically implements a combination of surgical excision and liposuction to correct enlarged male breasts.  An incision is generally made around the areola (dark skin surrounding the nipple) and excess fat and tissue are removed.  In more severe cases, a small ¼ inch incision is made at the base of the breast, and Dr. Michele Koo uses liposuction to remove any stubborn pockets of fat.  Since there is typically no extra skin to remove, scarring from this procedure is minimal and satisfaction rates are high.  If excess skin does need to be removed to ensure the best results, more significant scarring may occur.

Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction) Results

Results of male breast reduction are generally immediately apparent following the procedure and should be long-lasting.  The new chest size and improved proportions should also enhance self-image and boost self-confidence.

Over time, a man’s chest can change due to aging, weight fluctuations, hormonal factors and gravity.  Dr. Michele Koo will discuss these factors that may impact the results of a male breast reduction and offer suggestions to ensure long-lasting results.
